writer and social critic David Hoelscher, on "The Humanist Vision of
Star Trek: A Revisionist View." Humanism and Star Trek have been
closely linked since the 1960s. Creator Gene Roddenberry envisioned a
world where a secular humanist outlook had replaced theistic religion
as the dominant ethico-political philosophy. In 1991, AHA presented
Roddenberry with its Humanist Arts Award for "distinguished
contributions to humanism and humanist thought." With the 2018
announcement that Patrick Stewart would reprise 'Jean Luc Picard' in a
new Trek series, the AHA website posted "Star Trek is Re-Energizing.
And We Need It Now More Than Ever." Star Trek, the author wrote,
"provides a powerfully compelling model of how we can envision the
future of humanity." With Star Trek: Picard, we will revisit Star
Trek's humanistic ethos. Focusing on ethics, David Hoelscher will
argue that, contrary to prevailing opinion, Trekian humanism is deeply
flawed.
