Small-scale pieces for piano have long been among the most popular
types of Western "classical" music. The course traces the development
of this genre, from its early history as a central element of social
music-making in Biedermeier Vienna, to the salons of fin-de-siècle
France, and on through to the chic domains of neoclassicism that
emerged in a Europe wholly altered following the devastation of World
War I. Such pieces could at times amount to little more than charming
or sentimental fluff. But the genre's inherent sense of privacy seems
also to have prompted composers in all periods to write some of their
most intimate and affecting works. In lecture-concert format,
Professor Gallagher will bring to life the history and beauty of the
piano miniature. This program meets on two days (1/19 & 1/21) and the
price covers both sessions. More info can be found at the link.
