How to regulate social media is a hotly debated topic. Should Twitter
put warning labels on messages from the President, or Facebook decide
what news lands at the top of our feeds? Some believe that social
media have unleashed an unprecedented flood of harmful speech, while
others worry that regulation might curb freedom of expression. Such
heated disputes around harmful speech are not new. We will explore
what it means to define speech as harmful and the potential effects of
harmful speech. We will then consider how social media have changed
the landscape and what regulations might be effective. By the end, you
will be equipped to talk about how speech is changing today and what
we can do to create a vibrant world of free expression online. This
program meets twice (1/25 & 1/27), and the price covers both sessions.
